Technology giant Google has announced that it will launch its own range of driverless cars.

The vehicles will not have a driver. Therefore they have no controls, steering wheel or brakes; just a ‘stop-and-go’ button.

Google’s Electric Vehicles will seat two people and begin with a speed limiter of 25mph to ensure safety.

Building of the first 100 prototype vehicles will be start this summer. They will be equipped with manual controls during initial testing in California. Ultimately, these vehicles should be able to merge with general traffic rather than be restricted to purpose built lanes.

Driverless technology is not new to Google. Testing began in 2009, however it has always introduced its technology to existing EVs. This is the first car completely designed and planned by Google.

“We’re really excited about this vehicle – it’s something that will allow us to really push the capabilities of self driving technology, and understand the limitations,” said Chris Urmson, director of Google’s self-driving project.
”They won’t have a steering wheel, accelerator pedal, or brake pedal… because they don’t need them.”
